"New Approaches To Old Problems"

by Ed Bourgeois

Before we discuss resin it is useful to quickly review why it is used on wire EDM machines. The basic process goes like this: WEDM machine design traditionally uses deionized water for flushing, coolant and a dielectric fluid. That is it serves three purposes.

1. Flushes away the fines generated by the cut.

2. Cools both the workpiece and the wire.

3. Insulates machine and tooling from random DC arc-ing.

It is the last function that requires the use of water purifying resin. The resin is used to remove the metals that are in solution. These metals pass through the filter media and raise the conductivity of the water making it unusable. For purposes of our discussion I have divided this into these areas:

The Ion Exchange Process

Environmental Issues

Optimum Resin System Size

Resin Regeneration & Disposal Program
