CHILLER SIZING GUIDE

Typically on WEDM/CEDM the chiller size has been pre-determined by the manufacturer.  However, there are situations where chillers need to be sized for specific applications such as the addition of a high pressure pump or auxiliary filtration system.  The following is a breakdown of the formula used to calculate chiller sizes:

  1. Determine the capacity of the liquid in dielectric tank using this formula:

                L x W x H (inches)  ÷   231 (cu. inches/gallon)     =    Gallons

  1. Determine the weight per gallon of liquid.   Water is 8.33 lbs. per gallon.  EDM oils range from 5-9 lbs. per gallon.

  2. Determine the specific gravity of the liquid.  Water is 1.  EDM oils range from .8 to 1.2, including synthetics.

  3. Determine the temperature rise per hour of the liquid.  To determine the temperature rise, start with the liquid at room temperature.  (Typically first thing in the morning), start the machining process, measuring the temperature rise every 30 minutes for a 2 hour duration.  Use the higher temperature rise calculated for the 2 hours.  The reason for measuring every half hour is that the heat rise will not always be consistent.  Take these numbers calculating in steps 1 - 4 and plug into this formula:  Capacity in Gallons X Weight/Gallon in Pounds X Specific Gravity X Temperature Change Per Hour

  4. Example:  We have a conventional EDM machine with a dielectric tank that measures 48" x 36" x 24"; the specific gravity of the EDM oil is .85; the weight of the EDM oil is 6.5 lob. per gallon; the heat rise is calculated at 7 degrees per hour:  180 x 6.5 x .85 x 7 = 6961.50.  The recommended chiller would be EDM-PC-8000.

Helpful Formulas:

SPECIFIC HEAT OF OIL:   0.5 BTU/LB/ºF BTU = Kcal X 3.968
SPECIFIC HEAT OF WATER BASED COOLANTS:  1 BTU/LB/ºF 1 CUBIC FOOT = 7.5 GALLONS
WEIGHT OF OIL:  7.8 lbs./gal GALLONS = LITERS X 0.2642
WEIGHT OF WATER BASED COOLANTS:  8.3 lbs./gal PSI = BARS X 14.50
WATTS X 3.1413 = BTU FEET OF WATER X 0.434 = PSI
